B.C. is Canada's most westerly province. It has four designted wine regions: The Okanagan, Simikameen, and Fraser Valleys and Vancouver and Gulf Islands. The industry is not as large as the one in Ontario, but is growing about as fast. The wines at their best are equal to the best Ontario can produce and they also have their own V.Q.A appellation (Vintners Quality Alliance) which is more or less similar to the Ontario V.Q.A. .

Simikameen Valley
This wine region is located to the west of the Okanagan Valley. This valley is nearly a desert. It is tempered only by the Similkameen River. The region is known for it's large number of sun heat units and cool nights.

This area is the most developed with the largest number of wineries in BC. This valley is bordered on the south by Osoyoos near the U.S. border and in the north by Oliver B.C. It gets the largest number of heat units in Canada. The climate is almost desert like with a great variation in daytime highs and night time lows. In 1973 Dan Prpich bought 60 acres of farmland in the Okanagan and planted Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Okanagan Riesling, Verdelet, and Marechal Foch. Dan started making wine as an amateur back in 1959 in Hamilton. Further plantings include Chasselas, Pinot Noir, Merlot, along with Seyval Blanc, Vidal, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ehrenfelser and Lemberger. After starting out as a farm winery it became an estate winery in 1994. Visitors encounter a sign which was carved out in the 1960's along with antiquated farming equipment which is still operational. The winery is housed in a rustic building built in the 1930's. Wines are marketed under 2 labels St Hubertus and Oak Bay. The wines are not exposed to oak aging under the St Hubertus label but all wines are oaked under the Oak Bay label using both French and American barrels.
