Prince Edward County

I have so many pictures of Prince Edward County I have added a page2 & page 3 and page 4 to the Prince Edward County section. Have a look

Prince Edward County, including Picton is the fourth wine region in Ontario. It is about 2 hours drive east of Toronto. The growing season is as long as the Niagara Region, but the winters are colder. Vineyards are next to Lake Ontario, which has a moderating effect on air temperatures. The area is already the site of rich farm land. Local landmarks are Sandbanks Provincial Park, Black River Cheese, and many farm markets. tourists already come to the area for the Sandbanks Provincial Park, quaint towns, shopping, museums, fine dining and bed and breakfasts. Also, small inns such as The Bloomfield Inn , Picton Harbour Inn, Tip of the Bay Hotel, and Merrill Inn. More luxurious accommodation can be found at The Waring House Restaurant and Inn on Hwy 33, and Isaiah Tubbs Inn and Resort at West Lake. In nearby Belleville, the Ramada Inn by the Bay is a full service hotel. In Trenton there is the Holiday Inn. Close by, the Holiday Inn Kingston and Four Points Hotel Kingston are also recommended by the webmaster. For more information all of the above go to the official Prince Edward County website.

There are approximately 50 growers in Prince Edward County, with about 600 acres planted. Of these, 38 growers are commerical vineyards or wineries.

John Fricker and Marian Saunders of East Lake Sunset Vineyard hope to plant 1000 vines each year for the next five years to establish a winery or become a contract grape grower.

By Chadsey's Cairns is the newest winery to open in Prince Edward County, at 17432 Loyalist Parkway (Highway 33) near Wellington. Touring the grounds is a fascinating glimpse of pioneer life. The winery is a barn complex about 100 years old, and the barns were made from much older beams. The tasting room is a brick building circa 1800's that was perhaps an old school. One of the oldest sheep barns in Ontario is on the property, and the owners still raise sheep. On the grounds, there is an old cemetery, with the oldest grave from about 1802.

The owners have meticulously restored the wood interiors of the buildings.
