Winemaking has very deep roots in "la Belle Province" going back to the 16th century
The regions where most of the wineries are located in the area to the south
and east of Montreal.
There are two regions the Eastern Townships near the town of Dunham and the Monteregie.
The wines of the Eastern Townships as exemplified in their Seyval Blancs that have more
intense mineral and white pepper bouquets. The Montegerie's Seyvals are
rounder and fuller. The practice of hilling (covering grape vines with earth or straw)
is common here because of the very harsh winters (temperatures sometimes surpassing
-30 C). In spite of marginal weather conditions the wineries continue to produce wines
of surprising quality which continues to increase.
